The spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in South Africa: risk factors for acquisition and prevention.

چکیده
New, effective antibiotics are only likely to become available in 15 - 20 years. To prevent deaths from untreatable Gram-negative infections in South Africa, the rights of any doctor, whether in general or in hospital practice, to indiscriminately prescribe whatever antibiotic they wish, and in whatever fashion, must be challenged. Furthermore, although prevention of the emergence and subsequent spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has focused on acute and chronic care facilities and inter alia on antibiotic exposure in these institutions, CRE may soon become an issue within entire communities, highlighting a role for public health authorities in CRE prevention efforts.

Factors associated with acquisition of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae 1
OBJECTIVE to identify possible risk factors for acquisition of Enterobacterial strains with a marker for resistance to carbapenems. METHODS exploratory case-control study performed in hospital settings. The study sample consisted of patients with biological specimens that tested positive for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (cases), with the disk diffusion test and Etest, and controls ...

Background and objectives: Carbapenem-resistant and biofilm producing Enterobacteriaceaeare a major health problem. This study was carried to determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of grape seed extract (GSE) against carbapenem-resistant and biofilm producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates. Methods: Antibiotics susceptibility pattern...

متن کاملMicrobial Quality of Ready-to-Eat Street Vended Food Groups Sold in the Johannesburg Metropolis, South Africa
Background: In many developing countries, the risk of contracting a food-borne disease is high after consuming contaminated ready-to-eat Street-Vended Foods (SVFs). The main objective of this research was to assess the microbiological quality of SVF groups sold in the Johannesburg Metropolis, South Africa. Methods: A stratified random sampling procedure was used for collecting the ready-to-eat...

A ntimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the spread of multidrug resistant bacteria is a global patient safety problem and a major public health concern. In India, as elsewhere in South East Asia, many interlinked factors—including overuse of antibiotics, limited clinical diagnostic and laboratory capacity, and poor infection control, hygiene, and sanitation—have contributed to the emergence and spr...
